One important element of the competition is to measure the time of speedway riders, which is made by timekeeper. Currently this is his only job. Once, his task was also to indicate places of riders on the finish line. Due to the fact that usually a timekeeper is associated with a local club, it was decided that it would be fairer if such a decision is taken by a referee.
In addition to the winner's time it is measured so-called time of 3 minutes. The idea is that after passing the finish line by the first rider he has to start the timer for 3 minutes, because so much time on reaching the finish line has the last rider. This is important in case of engine failure of one of the riders. If he does not fit in time, he is disqualified.
It is differently with track records. Once, beating the record was financially rewarded. Now it has changed and riders do not approach it that way as it was years ago. Most often the best times are in the first 3-4 races then the track changes and times are getting worse.
